Career Opportunity through Networking
Networking is literally the key to any successful career path. Whether a person is hoping to move up in their company or is seeking a complete change, the saying really is true that it is about who you know. Mastering this skill can make looking for a job much more convenient, effective and increase the odds of finding the perfect fit for you.
Networking within a Company
Are you trying to create room for advancement in your position at the company you are currently employed at? If you’re not tapping into the right networks at your job, you could be missing vital opportunities. Start talking to people in HR and find out if there are any promotional opportunities you’re eligible for. Ask for a job description and list of criteria that must be met, then submit your application accordingly. Become a familiar face and should any jobs come across HR’s desk, chances are you’ll be the first to know about it.
Don’t be afraid to talk to your supervisor and other higher-ups, either. Express your desire for career development and growth within the company and what their advice would be to make yourself a viable candidate. Showing initiative is always impressive to companies. If you get the chance, seek a mentor-figure in the company that has achieved the goals you want to reach yourself. Depending on their availability and business relationship with you, they’ll be more than happy to take you under their wing and show you the ropes.
Networking Online
The Internet has made the process of conducting a jobsearch more streamlined and efficient. Of course there is more to using the Internet than simply sending out resumes electronically. There are plenty of ways individuals can use this medium for networking purposes in order to find the ideal career opportunity.
Sites like LinkedIn are popular these days. This site falls under the social networking category and was designed specifically to target job seekers and employers. Creating a profile on LinkedIn is free and allows an individual to not only post his/her resume but list their career history and any other applicable experience, as well as network with others in their field of expertise.
Connecting with the right people via social networking sites is a great way to have direct access to key players within a company. If you have always wanted to work as a graphic designer and recently added someone that works for a reputable, local graphic design firm, send him/her a message with your interest in any available job openings. Additionally, people will want to connect with you because your job title, skill set or other piece of information may match what they are looking for, hence a job opportunity that is literally handed to you.
Another way to use networking to your advantage is through the services of a recruitment agency. Providing your resume gives the agency an opportunity to market you towards the right opportunities according to your skill set.
