Local Cairns Economy

Cairns has an economy that strongly depends on tourism. With nearly 40% of its income from this area, Cairns is strongly affected by political and economical variations in Europe, Asia and North America as well as seasonal changes. In spite of this often uncertain situation, Cairns continues to grow and thrive.

Another area of income (20%) is Agriculture with Sugar as the by far largest crop. Fruit and Tobacco are also grown in large quantities in the cooler area of Atherton Tablelands, which is located West of Cairns at a higher altitude.

Significant revenues also come from the Mining, Manufacturing and Fishing. Cairns is also home to NQEA, a world leading ship building company.

At the moment, Cairns is going through a huge development boom, with large projects planned or near completion, including international hotels as well as land development for private housing. Tourism still shows the greatest growth potential in the coming decade with no signs of slowing down.
